Start Your Music Tutoring Program Today!

We’re excited to hear you are interested in starting a music tutoring program! We will work with you every step of the way to get your program up and running, free of charge. Here are some details on how the process works.

If you are a high school musician...

1. Reach Out

Let us know you’re interested in working with us by filling out an interest form.

2. Prepare Your Team

Find a friend or two who might be interested in helping you launch your program. To prepare for the meeting, read the Meeting Agenda & Focus Questionnaire that we send to you via email and create an account on our website.

3. Meet With Us

Once we receive your form, we will schedule a meeting with you. This will let us get to know you and how to best help you. Two members of the ALTO Team (one Executive Board member and one Regional Recruitment Officer) will be present at this meeting.

4. Review the Document

After the meeting, we will send you the ALTO Model Document which includes templates, information, and example pages to help start your music tutoring program. This is also where you'll discuss your plan with your music director, school, boosters, and any other people involved to ensure everything is feasible. Once you're done planning, you'll begin working on creating the logistical factors such as payment systems, social media, documents, and folders. We're free to answer any questions you may have and set up additional meetings as necessary. We will check in with you every week until our second meeting.

5. Second Meeting

Once your program's systems are put in place, we will meet with you a second time with the same two ALTO Team members. We will review all of the systems you have created and start building concrete plans for marketing, recruitment, and tutor training for your program's launch. We will also touch a bit on long term financial planning.

6. Launch Your Program

After our second meeting, you’ll be ready to begin recruiting tutors, finding students, matching tutors to students, and offering lessons! We will check in with you every few weeks to see how things are going, and we can set up additional meetings as necessary.

After one full lesson cycle (1-4 months), we will schedule the third meeting with you to reflect on your first lesson cycle and discuss what went well and what didn't. We will work together to build plans for the rest of the year, particularly on important topics such as financials, events planning, recruitment, and internal management. In addition to the same two ALTO Team members, our Chief Financial Officer and Program Events Coordinator will be present at this meeting.

7. Third Meeting

8. Keep Running Your Program

After our third meeting, you’ll continue running your program. We will check in with you every few weeks and will set up additional meetings with you to plan and execute new additions and developments to your program such as performances, fundraisers, workshops, local PR coverage, program expansion, transfer of leadership, and more! In addition, your program will be eligible to receive discounted music products and apply for grants through the ALTO Grants Program. We will continue to promote your program through showcases, social media, and referrals. Your program will also be invited to attend ALTO events such as monthly recitals, lectures, masterclasses, and music fairs.

If you are a school music director...

1. Reach Out

Let us know you’re interested in working with us by emailing us. Please give a brief overview of your music program, your school, details on the students served, and the role of music in the surrounding community. We will then email you with more details and answer any questions you may have.

2. Find Student Leaders

Find 2-3 high school students in your music tutoring program who are interested in being the student leaders (Program Coordinators) for the music tutoring program at your school.

3. Meet With Us

Once you have found Program Coordinators for the music tutoring program, we will schedule a meeting with you, your Program Coordinators, and two members of the ALTO Team. This meeting will let you and your Program Coordinators learn about how your program will operate and the duties that each position will entail.

4. Review the Document

From this stage on, your Program Coordinators will be leading the program and we will primarily communicate with them. We will send you and your Program Coordinators the ALTO Model Document which includes templates, information, and example pages to help start your music tutoring program. Once done planning, your Program Coordinators will begin working on creating the logistical factors of the program with your advice and input. These factors include the payment systems, social media, marketing material, documents, and folders. We will respond to all questions you and your Program Coordinators send us within 48 hours. Our team will check in with your Program Coordinators every week until the second meeting.

5. Second Meeting

Once your program's systems are put in place, we will meet with your Program Coordinators for a second time with the same two ALTO Team members. We will review all of the systems you have created and start building concrete plans for marketing, recruitment, and tutor training for your program's launch. We will also touch a bit on long term financial planning.

6. Launch Your Program

After the second meeting, your Program Coordinators will be ready recruit tutors, find students, match tutors to students, and begin offering lessons! You'll likely need to help your Program Coordinators get the word out to your school (district) and community. We will check in with your Program Coordinators every few weeks to see how things are going, and we can set up additional meetings as necessary.

7. Third Meeting

After one full lesson cycle (1-4 months), we will schedule the third meeting with your Program Coordinators to reflect on your first lesson cycle and discuss what went well and what didn't. We will work together to build plans for the rest of the year, particularly on important topics such as financials, events planning, recruitment, and internal management. In addition to the same two ALTO Team members, our Chief Financial Officer and Program Events Coordinator will be present at this meeting.

8. Keep Running the Program

After our third meeting, your Program Coordinators will continue running your program.
